National Night Out was designed not only as a way to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, but also as a means to generate support for anticrime organizations, increase participation in neighborhood watch programs, and send a message to criminals that neighborhood residents will band together to ensure a safe community.
Neighborhoods and communities are encouraged to participate in the National Night Out efforts by registering online. Registration is free and includes an Organizational Kit filled with materials to help make planning and throwing a National Night Out program a success. Past events have included block parties, neighborhood cookouts, visits from local law enforcement officers, parades, exhibits on safety, flashlight walks, contests or sweepstakes, and youth specific programs.
